Beeline Way is a natural space connecting the towns of New Malden and Raynes Park. Formally a closed area of land belonging to Thames Water, it is now a pedestrian walkway and cycle route housing a historic cattle bridge. Other features include a children's play area, an area of protected ancient woodland and views across Malden Golf Club and the ancient Beverley Brook.
Friends of Beeline Way are a small and dedicated group of volunteers formed from local environmental and community groups. We come together periodically to plant and maintain flowers, trees and shrubs in Beeline Way, and to support the important ecosystem - Beeline Way is a dedicated Site of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC) and supports a wide range of local wildlife.
We run periodic events at Beeline Way ranging from litter picks to forest management, to building natural environments such as hedgehog hides. Simplistically, rewilding is the act of bringing local ecosystems back to a healthy state - examples of rewilding activities can be planting sympathetic flowers in your garden, leaving grass verges to grow out, or even reintroducing local species of wildlife that previously had been unable to sustain themselves due to environmental changes.
Anyone can be a rewilder with a little imagination, some knowledge of local plants and animals, and a willingness to get involved safely and legally. Rewilding is sometimes conflated with guerrilla gardening - but both activities should always take place on public land (unless with agreement to work on private land), in a responsible way, and with permissions where required.
There are some tasks we will always encourage people to undertake whenever they can - picking up litter and placing it in one of the bins at either end of the Beeline, for example - or helping to pull up brambles and clear weeds* where needed. Other tasks are a little more involved - such as tree felling or clearing land - and we ask that you only perform those tasks under supervision at one of our events.
If you are knowledgeable with plants however and would like to donate something to the Beeline please speak to us and we'll happily work with you to find space for your gift. We seek to plant only locally sympathetic plants that will be viable in the soil types and with the air and water quality we have access to, to give them the best chance of survival.
*Some weeds are beneficial and help to condition the soil. We try to be careful not to remove useful plants unless they're causing a nuisance for more helpful ones.
Different areas of Beeline Way have different needs - some areas are heavy clay soil, whereas others have very dry, chalky soil. We try to plant species which have a good chance of survival and which serve a purpose - for example to form natural hedging or to provide a complementary food source to bees, butterflies and other pollinators.
We also aim to have year-round coverage for creatures that don't go into torpor over autumn and winter, so we may not have pretty flowers year-round but instead focus on mindful cultivation.
